The Rio Branco takes VEJA's signature silhouette and rebuilds it entirely from low-impact materials, without softening the line that made the brand's sneakers instantly recognisable. The upper is cut from Alveomesh, a technical mesh woven exclusively from recycled polyester: it reads as fine, almost papery from a distance, but flexes easily at the ankle and forefoot with wear. Suede panelling runs along the sides, sourced from the underside of bovine leather that's been brushed for softness, giving the shoe a tactile contrast between the technical mesh and a more traditional, brushed material. The V logo itself is moulded from a blend of rubber and rice waste, a small detail that carries the shoe's environmental logic right onto its most visible branding element. Underfoot, the construction keeps working: an insole built from Amazonian rubber, sugar cane, recycled E.V.A. and organic cotton, a midsole that's over half sugar cane, and an outsole combining Amazonian rubber and rice waste. None of this is cosmetic — it's the actual structure of the shoe, chosen to reduce reliance on virgin petroleum-based rubber without compromising the cushioning or grip expected of a daily trainer. The lining is 100% recycled polyester for a smooth, low-friction feel against the foot, and the laces are organic cotton, flat and easy to double-knot. The fit follows VEJA's usual last: a rounded toe box with enough room to move, a low-cut vamp that keeps the ankle free, and a structured heel counter that locks the foot in place without digging in. It sits true to size for most feet, with the mesh upper offering a touch more give than a leather sneaker would over the first few wears. The sole has moderate height — enough to give a clean line to trousers and skirts alike, without tipping into chunky trainer territory. On foot, the Rio Branco moves easily between registers. The suede panelling and considered proportions read dressier than a typical trainer, so it holds its own with tailored trousers, a wool coat and a plain sweater in the colder months, while the breathable mesh keeps it wearable through spring and early autumn with rolled denim or a midi skirt.
